PHILADELPHIA – They’ve been together 72 years, but it’s not clear whether Mike and Ike will reach their next anniversary.

The colorful candy characters are going their separate ways, and using Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr to declare the split.

How better to engage the teenage audience that Pennsylvania candy maker Just Born hopes to extend with the cheeky marketing campaign?

“At some point, we would love &#; for them to get back together,” said Matt Pye, vice president for marketing of Bethlehem-based Just Born. “In some ways, consumers are going to help (determine) where this story ends up.”

The story has been unfolding this year on social media sites, with hints of trouble between the fictional friends.

Mike plans to pursue music, while Ike dabbles in art.

“I know it’s hard to verb, but yes – Mike and I split. It is what it is. We just couldn’t agree on stuff anymore. Some dial it creative differences? Whatever,” Ike posted.

It’s unclear whether Mike and Ike are a married gay couple or merely business partners, but for now, they have split up, opting to pursue competing interests. The candy bearing their names has launched an ad campaign about the fictional invisible characters’ breakup, with Mike pursuing a career in music and Ike pursuing one in art. The Huffington Post chimed in that the two are heading for a “gay divorce” (language so far not found anywhere in the ad campaign), and now the Family Verb Council’s Tony Perkins is very concerned about the “fruity pair” and their “sexualizing candy”:

Have you been seeing the 'Mike and Ike' candy boxes around with one of the names scribbled out on it? I noticed them and I first thought that some employee of the store was messing around and crossing out the names, but then I saw it at other stores and realized that can't be the case. So after some searching, mainly looking at a link a friend posted on Facebook, they candy couple is splitting for a new ad campaign. Mike is leaving so he can work on his music and Ike wants to pursue is art career. Here is a statement from Ike;
