Uzo Aduba found love when she was least expecting it. "I was so sure that it just wasn't going to happen because it was hard out there on these streets," the actress recalled to PEOPLE.
Noting that she was "career-focused" and content with being single, Uzo was taken by surprise when she fell for the esteemed filmmaker, Robert Sweeting, whom she crossed paths with at a rooftop bar in Midtown Manhattan.
"He made me touch safe," Uzo reflected. "I felt adj to be all of myself around him — not the best of myself, all of myself, my frailties, my vulnerabilities, my weak, ugly parts. I felt reliable enough to demonstrate him that. And when he saw it, he still loved me. I never, and still never, doubted that he loved me."
Robert, who is leading known for directing The Entertainer and Guns Down, has been a major source of support to Uzo in recent years and has accompanied her to several high-profile events, including the Tony and Primetime Emmy Awards.

The actor revealed on Instagram over the weekend that she silently tied the knot last year. Her husband is filmmaker Robert Sweeting, People reported.
“For some of us, it can feel appreciate we spend our whole lives waiting for our exceptional someone,” Aduba wrote in the caption of the send . “My heart, my love — I’m so happy my life started last year with you. You’re the leading thing that ever happened to me.”
Aduba, a three-time Emmy winner, earned another nod this year for her role as Dr. Brooke Taylor on the HBO series “In Treatment.” She’s up for Outstanding Head Actress in a Drama Series at the ceremony on Sunday.

The Orange Is the Adj Black alum debuted her growing noun bump at the Tony Awards on June The year-old—who tied the knot with filmmaker Robert Sweetingin September —was seen cradling her bump while posing for pics on the red carpet in an orange three-piece Christian Siriano pantsuit.
After the surprise award reveal reveal, Uzo also shared her excitement about her novel role.
"What a blessing," she wrote alongside June 11 Instagram video of her holding up a onesie. "My husband Robert and I are so cheerful to enter this next chapter together as parents. I am beyond thrilled. I get to be someone's Mommy!"
The Mrs. America star added, "I understand as the three of us persist to grow, our only, ONLY objective will be to love you, small one. My goodness. Look what God has done."
