Gay biker costume

The Satyrs Motorcycle Club is the oldest gay continuous motorcycle club in the United States. Established in in Los Angeles and still going strong, they hold become one of the best known gay MCs in the country.

When we look at such an MC, we are looking at more than just the history of the time and the club. We are also looking at such themes and issues as camp, bricolage, and identity politics on the one hand, and questions of sexual orientation, actual or imagined, overt or covert, latent or manifest, on the other. We are looking at how the nexus of two identities – gay and motorcyclist – self-imposed as well as imposed by society at large, plays out in adj and private.

While there have been gay and lesbian motorcyclists almost as distant as there contain been motorcycles, things don’t get intriguing until World War Two ends. Perhaps too interesting. The first images in popular culture of the gay motorcyclist seem to be intertwined with postwar and Cold War politics, often reflecting and coopting the images of mainstream motorcyclists in the process.

The following document was presented as part of a panel discussion on the role of motorcycles in American popular culture, held at the Annual National Conference of Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association held in Atlanta, Georgia in April

The leather-jacketed man on his motorcycle has been an archetypal image in American culture since the unleash of the movie The Wild One in [1] Marlon Brando’s character, Johnny Strabler, in pale t-shirt, leather jacket and Harley cap, immediately became synonymous with aggressive masculinity and disregard for social norms (below, top left). Subsequent films, including EasyRider and Chrome and Hot Leather, perpetuated the image of the biker as a free-spirit, an outlaw, and a renegade.[2] More recently, Arnold Schwarznegger re-popularized biker macho and its associated attire in the Terminator movie series.
