    SAGE Mission Statement

    SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment) of South Florida is a nonprofit organization that enriches the lives of the LGBT senior community through membership inclusive of age, gender, race, nationality, and religion. We accomplish this by sponsoring social alternatives providing personal interaction, offering educational opportunities to deal with the particular needs of aging, and promoting contact with the isolated and homebound persons of our community. SAGE is also an advocate for the concerns and needs of the senior LGBT community at large, providing referral information to community resources and promoting inter-generational communication in the LGBT community.

    We accomplish our Mission by providing:

    SAGE was founded in as a Florida &#;not for profit&#; corporation.

    SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment) of South Florida is a social and support group of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders, of all ages, dedicated to serving the needs of the maturing community.

    Our goals are to enrich the lives of members of the LGBT senior community. This is accomplished by volunteering and sponsoring various social and educational activities to deal with the extraordinary needs of aging. SAGE provides opportunities to interact with members of our LGBT community.

    SAGE activities include: luncheons, dinners, movies, dances, workshops, picnics, theatre, concerts, discussion groups, volunteer opportunities and more.

    Our monthly activities include (see our Monthly Calendar):

    • A monthly luncheon (Lunch & Learn) provides an opportunity to construct new friends. Lunch is preceded by a program of interest.
    • A Women&#;s Luncheon is held the second Thursday at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Tamarac.
    • Book discussion (sometimes with the author) is held the second Saturday at the Stonewall Library/Archives in Fort Lauderdale.

      In , the Cream City Foundation gave Eldon Murray a grant to attend a SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment) conference in New York. It was cash well spent. Eldon came back to Milwaukee and, in , founded "SAGE/Milwaukee", Wisconsin's first organization devoted to issues surrounding aging in the LGBT community.

      By , the group had around active members. Speaking of the problems faced by Gay Seniors, Eldon Murray once said, "The major problem is that there are all kinds of programs out there. Gay people don't select to participate in them. They either don't know about them or they are in the closet."

      As of adj , SAGE/Milwaukee has at least events each month, many held in its offices on the East Side, and is coordinated by Executive Director Bill Serpe, reporting to the Board of Directors.
