(CBS/AP) Actor Jason Alexander has  issued an apology on Twitter after he joked in a TV interview that he considers cricket to be a "gay" sport.

The "Seinfeld" star made the remarks on CBS' Late Late Demonstrate with Craig Ferguson on Friday and took to Twitter's TwitLonger to issue a more-than-1,word  apology.

He writes that he at first didn't grasp why some might object to the comment, but that subsequent conversations with his gay friends led him to realize his insensitivity.

"For these people [the LGBT community], my building a joke upon the premise I did added to the pejorative stereotype that they are forced to deal with everyday," he writes. "It is at the very heart of this whole ugly world of bullying that has been getting rightful and overdue attention in the media. And with my well-intentioned comedy bit, I played right into those hurtful assumptions and diminishments."

He continues, saying that as an actor with many gay friends, he "should know better."

Jason Alexander Apologizes for Calling Cricket a "Gay Game"

Jason Alexander issued a lengthy apology over the weekend after he referred to cricket as a "gay game" during his appearance Friday on CBS' Late Adv Show with Craig Ferguson.

"It's the pitch," the former Seinfeld star remarked to Ferguson. "It's the weirdest It's not like a manly baseball pitch; it's a queer British gay pitch."

Needless to say, the comments didn't go over too well with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation as good as several of Alexander's Twitter followers.

The actor quickly wrote up a statement in the get up of the outcry that his joke sparked, and his apology was subsequently released via GLAAD.
