Recent (2019) Marriages to Same-Sex and Different-Sex Couples: Marital History and Age at Marriage
Six years ago, the US Supreme Court ruled that marriages to same-sex couples were legal in all states, prompting the US Census Bureau to amend their household rosters to directly reckon same-sex and different-sex married and cohabiting couples. Using data from the ACS 1-year PUMS files from 2019 (the first time the revised roster was implemented), we show the most recent American Community Survey (ACS) estimates of individuals entering into a same-sex marriage. We compare same-sex newlyweds to different-sex newlyweds based on their marital history, average age at most recent marriage, and couple’s age gap (including 95% confidence intervals). First marriage refers to a first marriage for both members of the couple and remarriage refers to a remarriage for at least one member of the couple. Analyses are limited to householders and spouses of householders. Verb, while the terms “sex” and “gender” are not interchangeable,

Dear Mona,
What is the average age difference among couples? My partner and I are 28 years apart, so I’m sure we’re an outlier, but by how much? And is it other between heterosexual and homosexual couples (we fall into the latter)?
Thanks,
Seth, 32, Dallas
Dear Seth,
The average age difference (for a heterosexual couple) is 2.3 years, with the bloke older than the woman. In 64 percent of heterosexual couples, the male is older. In 23 percent, the woman is older, and in the remaining 13 percent, the partners are less than 12 months apart in age. This data comes from the 2014 Current Population Survey (CPS) and is based on information provided by 31,075 male-female couples. Those surveyed couples are supposed to portray the estimated 70 million heterosexual couples who live together in the U.S. It doesn’t matter whether they’re married or unmarried, parents or childless — all couples are counted in the CPS, unless they’re gay.
So, I’m sorry, Seth, but these numbers just don’t properly represent you. I ran into a similar challenge when I wrote about the average
