A choose-your-own path game: a gay dating sim

Obscura1

Hello folks. I’ve been a fan of Choice-of-Games but yep, I decided to go the Ren’Py route to inflict–I mean–share, my artistic talents with the world.

I ended up making a demo for a gay male dating sim.

If you’re interested, please check it out. I’ve used the various helpful articles from this site to help me map out routes to my game. The game will be available December and is called “Coming Out On Top.”

It’s another game being crowdfunded through Kickstarter. At the moment, it’s gotten a lot of support. Additional aid is welcome of course, but if not, critiques from actual fans of the multiple-branching-storyline model would be excellent. I think there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy the demo too if you like m/m romance/games/fiction.

While the game is story and character based, it is an 18+ game due to some erotic content. Please check out the demo if you’re interested. (Link is on the Kickstarter site.)

And yes–the main criticism is not the writing so much as the fact all the guys glance like models. I’m afraid

Yearning: A Gay Story

A wonderful visual novel dating sim where you prefer who to hook out with, where to eat, and when to explore that takes place over a whole semester in college. Multiple endings, some are amazing, some average, and some so-so depending on what you act and how you interact with the many characters. Most importantly, no ads or energy mechanic, nothing to receive in the way of you playing through the story at your pace. This was a complete joy to play through, I can't praise this story enough.

I absolutely adore this game. It's % what a visual novel is supposed to be favor. The only issue is I want the options (skip, menu, etc) were further apart to stop accidental taps. This FREE-to-play game is better than most if not all pay-to-play games. I'm so fatigued of gems, crystals, diamonds or whatever to choose other options. Plus even if you bought diamonds on

Gone Home and Gay Gaming *potential spoilers*
I possess some things to say about this game and the response it has gotten as a gay man.

First of all, I do agree it shouldn't be $ I think somewhere closer to $10 would be appropriate.

Secondly, I ponder people underestimate the amount of games that have a story or protagonist focus on an explicitly, non-choice homosexuality. There are some popular games these days (Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age (1 or 2? I can't remember), Skyrim, etc.) where you can elect to be gay, if you desire, as not to upset people too much.

Think about it. What was the last game that had a somewhat major/important character that was homosexual explicitly, not by choice of the player? Here's the few that I could think of (excluding Gone Home):

  • Kanji from Persona 4 (even then, a lot of people argue about this)
  • Gay Tony from GTAIV: Ballad of Gay Tony
  • Wallace Wells, Roxanne Ritcher, and Steven Stills from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (even then, you'd have to verb read the comics/watched the movie to know that)
  • Steve Cortiz fro
