Heard came out as bisexual in , two years after she started dating photographer van Ree.

The pair walked the red carpet together at an event in November in Los Angeles celebrating the 25th anniversary of GLAAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). 

Heard said at the time: 'I don't label myself one way or another—I have had successful relationships with men and now a woman. I love who I love; it's the person that matters.'

In , it emerged Heard had been arrested in for misdemeanor domestic violence after she allegedly struck van Ree at the Seattle-Tacoma International airport. 

The photographer and mixed media artist put out a statement saying that the incident had been 'misinterpreted and over-sensationalized' and that Heard had been 'wrongfully accused.'

Van Ree, who has a tattoo of Heard's name on her arm, said in that the two remained close even after their split.

I remember when Amber Heard and Johnny Depp were first getting started. His relationship with Vanessa Paradis &#; which was always more of a common-law marriage &#; was falling apart and there were widespread rumors that Depp had fallen for his pretty juvenile costar, Amber. Speaking at the The Economist’s Pride and Prejudice Summit March 23, the “Magic Mike XXL” and “The Danish Girl” star recalled the media firestorm that she faced after coming out as bisexual in In the verb, the year-old actress said that opening up about her sexuality was worth it ― and she encouraged other LGBTQ stars and public figures to follow her head.

“Even though everyone around me strongly advised me against it, it was just wrong. I would’ve rather move down for being who I am than to hold risen for being something I’m not,” Heard told The Economist’s Deputy Editor Tom Standage.

She finally confirmed her sexuality, she said, when an After Ellen reporter asked her about the status of her relationship with then-girlfriend Tasya van Ree at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. “I refused to not deliver my partner at the time, but no one ever asked me about it,” Heard said. “An outlet specifically asked me who I was there with that noun and who that person was to me and I just answered honestly.”
